TRAVELLING TO COPENHAGEN

Not to mince my words, but… I don’t think I’d be happy to go on holiday with the kids if we’re not flying via business class!

I know that sounds suuuuuper snobby, but man, if you’ve ever flown with one or more babies, and flown both Economy and Business (to be able to compare the different), you’ll know exactly what I mean.

That flat bed? An absolute LIFE SAVER.

The more attentive service? Totally appreciated.

The extra space and fewer passengers nearby? Such a relief!

Hunter, to his delight, was booked into his very own seat. Come to think of it, I don’t actually think my parents have ever paid for a business class trip on any of our family holidays when I was little! We only did so cos of Dad’s company. But somehow, they decided their grandkids needed the comfort and it was the best decision ever.

I was actually pretty surprised that Hunter enjoyed sitting in his own seat, so much so that he happily stayed put in there for about 45mins before the plane took off. That’s pretty stellar for a two year old! He stayed in it for the entire plane trip, actually. Which was over 12 hours. A HUGE difference to when we travelled Economy and he spent half the time tearing up and down the aisles, fidgeting and driving everyone insane.

So pleased with his own flat bed seat

Business class food? Well, I pretty much didn’t eat any during this trip ;) I was frantically trying to get both kids to sleep at the start, when all the food was being served. So all I got was my drink, and that was it!! Missed out on THE ENTIRE MEAL :( They saved it for me and said they would serve it to me later, but frankly, after the effort of putting the kids to sleep, all I wanted to do was sleep as well.

Sat in business class, and all I got was a drink :X

Hunter fared pretty well in the food stakes. He got this big lunchbox packed full of goodies. Obviously we took away his chips/chocolates/cakes/cookies (who puts this crap in a kids meal anyway?!?! Hello fast track to obesity land), but he ate the ‘proper’ food well.

Hunter appraising his lunch box

I did manage to sneak in breakfast, which was the very last meal when we arrived. It wasn’t that exciting to be honest. Though, their latte was top notch!!!

Breakfast on the plane

So the kids were a royal pain to put to sleep. They would’ve probably been wonderfully behaved if I’d let them stay up, but since I was forcing them to sleep, there was lots of crying and resisting until they finally gave up and knocked out. I did discover a secret though – lie Hunter down flat, pull the blanket up over him, put his headphones on, and turn on a movie (at low volume). He lies there quietly watching, then simply drifts off. WIN!!

Hunter in his own seat, and poor Carter stuffed into a tiny cot. Life’s not fair!

When they were awake, they were kept amused with the flight attendants. Perhaps not many babies fly in business class, because they were all over Carter! Not so much Hunter, because he ignored them in favour of watching a movie. But Carter, Carter was so joyous with all this female attention and MILKED IT FOR ALL IT WAS WORTH.

Hi ladies! Look but no touchies ok? I have separation anxiety.

One of his trademark looks – this squishy chinaman smile!

Hullo Copenhagen!

And then……. we were in Copenhagen! Man, there aren’t many Asian people around here. It’s predominantly really tall blond people, to be honest. So I feel like we realllyyyy stick out! The city is so baby friendly and the people are lovely here.

Loving it here already :)

This flight was such a far cry to when I used to travel business class on work trips. I didn’t get a chance to watch a gazillion movies until my eyeballs hurt (though granted I managed to squeeze in one!). I didn’t get to eat my meal at a leisurely pace.. or simply even get to eat it. I didn’t get to do special requests for additional meals. I didn’t get to ask for more drinks, or even get a sip of alcohol. Most of all, I didn’t get to lie down flat and relax and sleep.

That said, it’s insane how different travelling business vs economy is when you have kids with you!! And frankly, I don’t think Hunter will be very happy if he goes back to economy and can’t lie down flat to sleep.

Guess no more holidays in the near future for us ;)

(PS. this blog post sounds a little disjointed and I’m posting it without bothering to proof read or even preview. Sorry. I’m severely lacking in the sleep department after having zero sleep on the plane, and our first night in Copenhagen wasn’t great since both kids were ready to party at 5:30AM this morning, thanks to jetlag. This is our second night here and it’s 11PM now, so I better head off to bed since I’ll probably have to wake up in a couple of hours anyway!!)

THE MAGICAL POND

So remember when I blogged about the Singapore Innovative Children’s Festival a few days ago? I brought both kids to The Magical Pond (on the morning we left for Copenhagen – yes we managed to squeeze it in!) and was so impressed.

A little booklet on The Magical Pond, and other performances by SICF

Waiting to go in and watch the show

It’s true, their marketing. It honestly is one of a kind, and both unique and super fun at the same time.

I’m very accustomed to the usual children’s plays and performances. This is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.

It’s on the ceiling!

I admit, I was drawn to that alone ;) So the idea is that up to 12 adults (with their kids) lie down on cushions and mats.. and watch The Magical Pond above them. It’s meant to relax the kids and make you feel like you’re in the pond, looking up.

A world-first in children’s shows… where it’s all on the ceiling

I really enjoyed the music and found out later it was Vivaldi. The kids were all pretty awestruck with the moving images. Frankly, the movie isn’t going to entrance the adults like it did the kids. It’s super boring for adults. LOL!! If you’re familiar with The Hungry Caterpillar, well, the images are like that – sort of abstract, geometrical, and colourful. It’s been seen to be highly engaging with young children, and it’s evident by the way my kids sat through the 45 min performance without fussing!

Screenshots of what was shown on the ceiling

PHWOAR!!!

Hunter, thoroughly enjoying the show

Looking all snuggled up and ready for a nap ;)

Targeted for kids aged 7-18 months, I found that actually, Hunter (28 months) may have enjoyed it even more than Carter! He spent the whole time giving us a running commentary on what was going on (look mama, trees! balls! tomatoes!…. ad infinitum) and had a BLAST with the interactive activities weaved through the show.

Carter, very pleased with his giant sunflower to wave around

Catching fish! Hunter’s on the right using his leg to kick the fish.

Little balls and rubber duckies to play with

Playing with bubbles after the performance

I’d liken The Magical Pond to having a play group in your home. You chill out in a very relaxed and comfortable environment with your baby and other babies, and there are little toys and activities to amuse them too. Really great concept, and so engaging. Love it!

The Magical Pond is showing daily until 22 June (Sat), every 10:30am, 12:30pm, 2:30pm, 4:30pm.

HAPPY FATHERS DAY TO CHRIS!

I was gagging to bring Chris to Man Fu Yuan for brunch, after having gone with a girl friend a couple of weeks ago and fell in love with their yum cha there.I personally reckon the dim sum dishes are one of the finest and loveliest I’ve had. Though I admit, I don’t often (rarely) go for yum cha!

And so I thought it would be a pretty neat idea to go Chinese style for Fathers Day this year and take Chris there, as well as my parents. It would make for a nice little celebration, and wouldn’t have all those set meals that most other cafes have (I don’t like being forced to/obliged to order set meals, as I like to pick and choose to my liking from a la carte menus).

Inside Man Fu Yuan

A little introduction

I love this family shot of us :)

Hunter took all these photos by himself. He kept saying “do silly pose!!” as he snapped away. And so we obliged.

The service there is really attentive, discreet and polite. You really feel like you’re being taken care of. Though, they should’ve taken the initiative to warn us when we ordered WAY too much. If we can barely finish the food, you know it’s way too much food for a regular human being!

Roasted pork belly – perfectly crisp and full of juiciness. Divine.

Calamari with salted egg yolk – it was a bit odd but it worked! Hunter chowed down on quite a few pieces, so I guess that’s a thumbs up.

Hunter going to town on the calamari and crispy noodle thingys

Yam cake – traditionally these are pan fried. But Man Fu Yuan’s take is to deep fry them, and they’re fantastic this way!!

Beef brisket in casserole – this was the only dud dish. That’s my personal opinion, since Chris quite liked this. I just really disliked it because it was full of tendon and tripe and all sorts of weird stuff… *shudder*…

Steamed prawn dumplings – they look really simple, but were done beautifully

Some sort of crispy beancurd skin wrapped around prawns – this was just average to me. Then again, I never like this sort of dish anywhere.

Steamed cod in rice wine – actually it looked like it was in a silky egg custard. Hunter and Carter loved it and polished it off!

Molten egg yolk custard buns – OMG OMG OMG. An absolute must-order. The molten cream is deliciously salty and sweet, and the whole bun is quickly deep fried. It’s AMAZING. A total must order, and worth coming here for this alone!!

Custard egg tarts – good but not amazing

Carter REFUSES to let us eat at the table unless he’s eating as well (otherwise, bring on the hysterics!). But now we know that if we give him a few grains of rice, he’ll be so amazed with how it sticks onto his fingers that it buys us a few minutes to scoff our food down ;)

We had a lovely quiet lunch for Fathers Day and the kids were well behaved, so that was Chris’ Fathers Day gift ;) I’m glad I married someone so patient. He is the rock in our family, that always keeps his cool, which is so important for the kids to see in a father figure. They say you never really know a man until he becomes the father of your children – and I absolutely agree. When I saw him holding each of our children when they were born, and how he interacts and cares about them daily, I see a wonderful father that our children will be so proud of.

HAPPY FATHERS DAY to you, my love!!

And sorry this post is so late. Was busy flying to Copenhagen and all :P

OFF TO COPENHAGEN!

My parents, in a moment of madness awesomeness, decided to take all six of us on a jaunt to Copenhagen….. via business class!

They have this idea to take our while family on a big overseas trio each year… hence our Boston/USA trip last year. But this year we are off to Europe instead. Wheeeeee :D

Unbelievably, I forgot my camera.

Super facepalm!

Thus all my blog entries will have crappy ol iPhone pictures. Sighhhhh……

Anyhoodle, I’m off. See you guys in Europe!!

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY TO MY DADDY

If you know him in real life, you’ll agree with me that my father is a man of few words. He isn’t overly affectionate in public. He wasn’t effusive with his “I love you”. He was not a person to gush.

But I knew he loved me.

It wasn’t the fact that my parents tried for 7 years (!) before they managed to conceive me, or the fact that they couldn’t have another child after me. I guess that kind of made me know I was really treasured by my parents.  But it was (and is) always the selfless and thoughtful things he does for me that the message of I LOVE YOU is LOUD AND CLEAR.

I actually don’t know another man that is as willing to sacrifice all his time, his energy, and his efforts in both raising his own kid, and now in helping to raise his grandkids. My friends that have met him in real life always comment on how unusual he is, how he will do anything and everything for our family, and how he will willingly drop everything to help me out.

I can always count on him. ALWAYS.

Something that I will always remember is this little video he made, just for me, at our wedding.

If you’ve just watched that video, you’ll understand that there is nothing more to say here :)

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY, my dearest daddy!!

32 years later, and I’m still perfectly happy to kiss you and sit on your lap (despite your protestations) ;)

Your little girl… forever and always.
