FOOD, Moscow, Uncategorized EUROTRIP: RUSSIAN FOOD 12 September 2010

I was so excited to try Russian food. Never had it before! Well, bits and bobs, but obviously not in Russia so it doesn’t count πŸ˜‰ Verdict? It’s very more-ish and stodgy… but so delicious, heh! It’s great if you’re into fatty creamy foods, not so good if you’re on a diet or into healthy-living. I mean, you can just eat salads (with creamy dressing on the side), but that’s just no fun when the other food is so inviting, is it?!

Russians eat a lot of bread (much like people in Europe I suppose) and a lot of the salads have some sort of cream sauce, coleslaw style. Their soups are healthy though, specifically the Borscht soup! I was so surprised when we got this because it is NOTHING like the “Borscht” I’ve had in other parts of the real (I realise now they are far from authentic). The proper Russian Borscht soup is predominantly made with beetroot, so the soup is a bright red/pink broth. It’s unique but yummy πŸ™‚

And of course, the meats. Lots of deep fried, lots of meat swimming in pools of cream sauce, and lots of cheese and butter. It’s all really appetizing, obviously! You can’t really go wrong with deep-fried food smothered in cheese, can you πŸ˜‰

At Cafe My My for lunch

What a cool interior

Beautiful glazed buns and salads galore

Huge vats of meats

Our tomato salad with sour cream(?)

The famous Russian Borscht soup!

Deeeeelish fried chicken and cheese, with butter rice

Giant meatball thing with creamy buttery mashed potatoes

The little bun had apple inside, like an apple pie!

A fluffy cheese cake

Complimentary caramels

Another cafeteria-style Russian place – I just loved these! Cheap and good.

Dessert bar……. *lusts*

Creamy pasta carbonara and meatball with cream sauce, and
Meatball in creamy nut sauce with rice and chicken kebab

This is, actually, Ukrainian type of borscht.
What you call “caramels” are far away from caramels by any mean, those are “cows” and they make it from milk πŸ™‚

BTW Mu-Mu is among worst “restaurant” chains in Russia.

Continue having fun reading about your Russian adventures. Hahaha. Cafe “My My” is actually “Moo Moo”(what cow says) in Russian. “Moo moo” is the brand of the caramel with 10 years history. They remind me about childhood I used to eat tons of “Moo Moos” and even now when go home eat them. Another thing, it’s not Borsch on your photo, it’s another type of beatroot soup called “svekolnik” in Russian. Borsch looks different not so . Maybe one day I will cook it for you, cause I kinda miss it too. The problem is that there is no “salo”(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salo_%28food%29) in Shanghai. BTW Borsch is a Ukrainian dish πŸ˜‰ and Russian adaptation is not considered to be authentic.

I wouldn’t judge Russian cuisine based on this type of eateries, cause usually the quality of food there is so so. It’s the level of the cheap food court in Chinese malls.

We were never sure whether to say MyMy or MooMoo! But I guess MooMoo is correct when verbally said since thats how it’s pronounced in Russian πŸ˜›

The waitress told me the soup was Borscht… grrrr!! The version I had in Singapore is brownish with beef and no beetroot in it.

I think Cafe Pushkin do good authentic Russian food? They were reaaaaallly goood

RUSSIAN CONCIDERING

Please, do not make such things… ukrainian is not nation from Mars… Ukrainians – it’s Polish name for Russians, which were under their occupation… Please read more about Talergof and Terezin to find out where from Ukrainians come…

Re: RUSSIAN CONCIDERING

Yeah, perhaps Ukraine is a Polish name for Russia. So then it means that Ukraine is Russia, isn’t it? And then it would be also true to say that America is a person cause it was named after Amerigo Vespucci…

How it is named or whoever name it doesn’t change the fact it is a whole new country. Continue reading.

I saw this chain restaurant, My My (I think it’s pronouced as Moo Moo), everywhere when I was in Moscow this summer. Too bad we didn’t go in. The food looks pretty good and the salad bar is huge!
