Happy 13 months, Hunter!

I thought the above photo was pretty apt.. since it was taken today, his 13th month birthday :)
Boy, it’s true what they say about kids having a HUGE developmental leap at the 1 year mark. Even friends that see him pretty frequently have noticed how different he is and all the new stuff he’s learned. He watches me very carefully and will mimic my actions and words – very cute :) It’s pretty cool watching a kid just ABSORB the information and world around them, and spit it right back out after they’ve learned it. Their brains truly are like a sponge! It makes it a joy to be around Hunter, because he’s responsive and we can have little ‘conversations’ with him.
What we find something AMAZING to do with your child, is baby sign language. It has really helped us so much, AND I feel it’s really good for the child because it means they can express themselves properly. It’s because of baby sign that I feel Hunter screams less than normal, simply because he can express his desires. It also makes him feel more in control, and able to communicate with us, which I feel is really good for a child’s psyche. The signs he’s mastered are:
These signs each took about 3 days to master, which I think is not too bad, considering the long term benefits! Short term pain (lots of repeating yourself and helping them make the actions), long term gain :)
Next up, I’m planning to teach him Sleepy and Diaper signs. But they’re not very critical because he sleeps at such specific times, and he’s already poo-diaper trained.. I’m a big believer of baby sign language though. And despite some people thinking it may prevent a kid from speaking, I don’t think it’s affected because Hunter makes noises/says words in addition to signing. And regardless, it makes all our lives easier!
MONTH 12-13 PROGRESS:

Hunter’s now at such an interactive age that it makes each day and moment with him so exciting. We really do experience second childhood through our kids! Wish I could capture this moment in time and remember it forever..
PREVIOUS PROGRESS:
My gf is on a mission going through various play-groups/schools/gyms for her little one… so Hunter and I got the awesome benefit of hitching onto all her good research and tagging along for them! I don’t know what all the various things are called.. play gym, play school, play group, etc etc etc.. It’s basically those ~1 hour things that people bring kids to, for them to interact and play. Can be in a class setting, or can be ‘free play’ with no formal agenda.
#1: playgym class. This was at a place called My Gym at Rochester Mall. It’s basically a big, padded playground where the class involves singing and actions/dancing. Hunter HATED it. He was not a fan of the really shrill, loud female teachers.. and just hates people getting in his face in general. He was most unimpressed with all the tumbling, swinging etc that was involved.. and spent 99% of the time CLINGING onto me for dear life and wailing miserably whenever he was taken out of my arms. Incidentally, this is why all the photos below were taken before the class and just outside the gym area.. it was impossible for me to get a free hand to take pics during the class :P That said, to give him benefit of the doubt, the class was schedule smack bang on the time he has his lunch and then his nap.. so he was hungry and exhausted, and really in no mood for all the madness round him.

#2: playschool class. This was at Bibinogs, which is pretty famous in Singapore. This one focuses on songs and dance as well, but in a classroom setting. Really liked how they had story time, and arts & crafts session. Hunter actually rather liked this – no meltdowns, no clinging to me (he actually wandered off BY HIMSELF – whooooaaaaa!). He did like Snacktime the best (LOL) and Chinese 15-min storytime the worst (immediately wandered off to find something else to do).

#4: playgym free play. This is at Gymboree, where there’s no formal class or setting. You simply pop your kid in and they can climb/play on all the equipment. I think Hunter enjoyed this one the most. It was very chill with no shrill voices in his face, and he could explore and scramble all around the place. You could argue that he could do the same thing at home, but I feel it’s quite different because I don’t fear for his safety in a padded environment like this, and it contains a lot of equipment for him to check out. He was very pleased with it all and the 1 hour totally zonked him out afterwards!

Why do babies always like to climb UP slides instead?!

TOO CUTE!!!!

He spent most of the time chasing the various balls around the gym

So I hope that helps if you’re a parent and looking around for this sort of thing for your kid. Frankly, I don’t think these 1 hour classes do much considering they are so pricey – partly perhaps because our kids are a bit young, but also because at the end of the day, it’s pretty basic stuff that they do in these classes! I personally feel that Hunter absorbs/learn more through me talking to him and spending so much time interacting with him, than if I take him to these classes. For this reason, I wouldn’t sign up for a package with these places.
However, Hunter and I enjoyed the playgym style stuff like Gymboree. This was just going in by yourself, with no formal class, and it’s a fraction of the cost since you’re really just paying to use the padded equipment. I think it’s perfect for kids his age right now, because provides them with a safe environment to scramble everywhere and get rid of all their excess energy. For that reason, I’ll probably sign us up for a membership ($50/year) so it’s $10 entrance fee each time.
Epicurious
The Quayside
60 Robertson Quay
Singapore
PRICE: $$$
RATING: ★★★–
A chilled out brunch is one of my favourite ‘activities’.. and Epicurious does do the job very well. It’s situated right by the river, and so makes for a nice meal, plus a lazy walk by the river afterwards. It’s very family-friendly, particularly since it’s outdoors, so there are often loads of families and kids around. Only there’s not that many tables, so be prepared to wait if you go smack at (food) peak hour on a weekend!
We previously found the food a bit hit-and-miss, especially given the price tags.. but this time, all of it was pretty good :) I loved the Green eggs and ham, which was pesto-swirled eggs and ham on a large slice of bread, and I added sausages and grilled mushrooms to it as well. It’s also fab because the dish is a big portion (given there were 2 extras to it), so it can be shared between 2 people if you don’t feel like pigging out.

Green eggs and ham!
The pancakes came out so pretty, they looked almost fake ;) 3 fluffy pancakes with a scattering of fruit and drizzled with syrup. YUM!! Would’ve been been better if they had given lashings of whipped butter. Mmmm…

Stack of pancakes
The French toast also came out beautifully presented, and dusted with icing sugar as well as fruit on top. It was made from raisin toast though, which they do point out in the menu so there are no surprises, but I prefer regular bread. It also came with a sort of marmalade dip, and I’d have liked butter and maple syrup a lot more. Guess I could’ve easily asked for it, though :P

Seems that I’m at Food for Thought all the time now ;) The lovely food, the reasonable prices, the fantastic playground and the great location (right smack in the Botanic Gardens)… it’s all the perfect recipe when you have a kid. Hunter absolutely loves it there and starts going a little frantic once we step in.. because he knows the playground is behind the glass doors and he gets pretty desperate to get out there to stretch his legs and toddle around!
Service there is always so friendly and the food arrives promptly. Great when you have fidgety kids that can create quite a mess! Hunter loves scrambling around the chairs and tables.. they’re perfect holding-on height for him ;)

3 little kiddies on the stair! Hunter is so fair he's practically GLOWING here.. haha..
We took the kids to Jacob Ballas garden, a lush garden that features a water fountain area that’s a hit with children. It’s a particularly great way to cool them off when it’s hot outside!
Except… our lil Hunter was decidedly unimpressed with the water fountain! He looked on with suspicion as all the lil girls dashed in and out of the water, having a good time. And when I brought him near, he’d WHINNNNE like I was trying to torture him and barnacled onto my leg, refusing to let go.
So, I spent the entire time standing in the middle of the play area, with my son clinging onto me for dear life. I guess I wouldn’t exactly call that a success ;) Better luck next time!

2 lil girls... SORRY! One's a boy. Hunter had to wear a girl's hat cos I forgot his (oops)
