GOOD ‘OL LOCAL FOOD @ BUKIT TIMAH MARKETS

I’m a HUGE fan of local food in Singapore. I think it ranks up there as my favourite cuisine.. alongside Japanese and French. I only ‘discovered’ the delights of Singaporean local food when I was around 18 yrs old, and it was actually in Australia that I first tasted Singaporean food (unbelievable, right?)

Since then, I’ve obviously had Singaporean food IN Singapore, and I freakin’ ADORE the stuff. Honestly, I could eat it every single day (actually, I think I do) and not get bored. The range is huge, and virtually everything is fantastic.

I like to go to the one at Bukit Timah Markets, which is above the markets and has really friendly folk. Check out the dinner we had the other night!

BBQ chicken wings.. so glossy and plump, yummeh..

How could we NOT order satay?? Grilled to perfection.

Fried chae tow kway (however you spell it?), Chris' favourite food. They do it beautifully crisp here, and you get a really decent portion for just $2

My personal favourite - sambal stingray!! It's better than fish imho, because it's less fishy smelling, more tender meat, and no random bones in the meat. Divine.

And look what my friend made me! It’s the ‘Tie the knot’ gold necklace from Sparklethots. She made it with an extra-thin gold chain which I prefer since I like super-delicate jewellery. The bow is so beautifully crafted and smooth, and sits flat against me. It’s a quiet and subtle piece but oh-so-feminine and delicate. Beautiful. Makes freakin’ fabulous Christmas present for a girl friend or sister, too :)

Hunter's hair is finally growing! With a funny lil curl of hair above his right ear, that I can't quite seem to flatten down ;)

INSPIRATIONAL BANGLE

This was a total impulse purchase whilst I was in Macy’s in San Jose, in the Valley Fair Mall just at Santana Row. I was just wandering around the jewelery section and saw these Inspirational jewelry. It was a whole bunch of various jewelery, but the bangles attracted me the most. My favourite one that immediately caught my eye was a delicate inspirational bangle with really lovely sayings around it:

Choose this moment
Love
Shine
Dream Big
Love Life
Be Brave
Smile
Laugh
Sing
Play
Dare to be different
Wish

For such a wee bracelet, they sure managed to squeeze in a lot of phrases and little pictures! I love it because it sums up a lot of the phrases I live and believe in, and I like the thought of being able to read it and remind myself to count my blessings any time I feel down or stressed. It was US$80 but it was discounted to about $30 or so, what a bargain :D

The quality is really good, considering it’s really thin and delicate. Best of all, I can clamp/squeeze it so the ends touch and it manages to fit my 5″ wrist, so it’s very customisable :) Just a nice little thing that I keep on my wrist 24/7, I wear it next to my Tiffany & Co silver cuff ‘cos the contrast of weight and size feels nice and it makes a nice ‘clinking’ sound when I move :)

USA: FLYING LIZARD DESIGNS GEMSTONE NECKLACE

I stayed at the pretty Hotel Valencia whilst in San Jose, USA. It’s right on Santana Row – famous for all their restaurants and shopping. I adore Santana Row because it’s like a little laid back but ritzy village.. all gorgeous weather, flowers everywhere, and el fresco dining. People are dressed casual chic, always friendly and polite, and there is NO spitting on the streets. It’s heavenly!

Anyway, there is a little jewellery boutique across the road from the hotel, called Flying Lizard Designs. The jewellery appears on celebrities and in movies, though I can’t say I’ve ever noticed :P What caught my eye were the whimsical, delicate strands of jewels in the shop window. Draped in the window, they sparkled and came in an assortment of pretty colours and stones. So absolutely gorgeous! What I like best about the shop is that they make 2 identical designs – 1 using precious stones (and expensive) and 1 using regular materials or plastic pearls (and so way cheaper). It’s such a good idea because you can buy a piece of jewellery that looks JUST like the expensive version, but it’s only $30.

Anyway, after much deliberation and poking at just about every piece in the store, I finally decided on a strand of pearls with garnet, appetite, peridot, citrine gemstones. It was so pretty it took my breath away as it glistened in the sunlight streaming in through the glass windows. It’s really delicate and thin, with tiny gold links and the pearls and gemstones scattered all over it. It’s simple enough to be worn with any colour outfit, but pretty enough to still stand out than a regular strand of pearls.

It’s a long strand, so it can be worn long, or circled around twice for a double-strand necklace. Or, as a bracelet. Or, as a belt. Super cute :P

Some of their other designs. That shimmery opal necklace is calling my name!

LILLI’S SHANGHAI TOURMALINE NECKLACE&BRACELET

One of my favourite jewellery stores in Shanghai is Lilli’s Shanghai. Their hand-made pieces are beautiful and unique, and I love the myriad of gemstones and diamonds that they use. Most of all, they’re a trustworthy store since I would never buy jewellery from really local places or street-side vendors.

Only problem? Every time I step in there, I walk out with something :P Their jewellery’s too pretty to resist! Last time I bought those gorgeous Morganite and black gold earrings. Since, I picked up a Tourmaline gemstone necklace, and a Tourmaline gemstone bracelet. They weren’t too expensive and I really like the smooth feel of the stones. They’re just nice, simple jewellery to wear on a casual day :)
